Cylindromas are rare tumours of the apocrine or eccrine glands classified within the family of skin adnexal tumors. The term cylindroma was first used by Billroth in 1859 to describe an orbital tumour with cylindrical shapes seen on histology1.

It is also known as dermal eccrine cylindroma. The tumor predominantly forms on the scalp and forehead and may be solitary or occur in groups. Furthermore, cylindoma may also develop together with spiradenomas and trichoepitheliomas. Cylindroma is a benign adnexal tumour. The tumour showed apocrine and trichoepitheliomatous differentiation which indicated complex hair follicle (folliculo-sebaceous-apocrine).

Cytology consists of many clusters of small round to oval basaloid cells surrounded and attached with magenta coloured acellular hyaline material. Definition / general Benign tumor with debated origin from eccrine sweat glands or hair follicles Also called turban tumor, particularly when a large, multicentric scalp tumor Familial form (turban tumor syndrome, Brooke-Spiegler syndrome) Multiple cylindromas are commonly genetically inherited and also known as "turban tumor." Cytology of dermal cylindroma is rarely discussed in previous literature. We have diagnosed a case of dermal cylindroma of scalp in an elderly female patient by fine needle aspiration cytology of the lesion and further confirmation was done by histopathology. cylindroma located on the left parietal-occipital scalp that was treated twice by Mohs micrographic surgery in an attempt to excise the tumor completely and to minimize the excision of normal tissue. Our case is the sixteenth reported case of malignant cylindroma in the world literature. A 36-year-old woman presented with lesions on her scalp, face and trunk. Histopathological examination of these lesions demonstrated facial trichoepithelioma, and scalp cylindroma.

Cylindromas are rare benign tumors arising chiefly on the scalp. They are commoner in women. The tumors are pinkish, firm, nodular, and generally painless, and may be a few millimeters to more than 6 centimeters in diameter.

Several of these have been biopsied or removed with a diagnosis of cylindromas. Cylindromas are benign tumors with a differentiation towards apocrine sweat glands that increase in number and size throughout life.

Cylindroma is a benign adnexal tumour. The tumour showed apocrine and trichoepitheliomatous differentiation which indicated complex hair follicle (folliculo-sebaceous-apocrine). According to recent studies immunohistochemical examination has shown myoepithelial, apocrine, eccrine, ductal, and secretory features in both cylindromas and spiradenomas .

eccrine dermal - see Neoplasm, skin, benign. Malignant cylindroma may develop via malignant transformation of cylindroma in rare instances or may develop de novo in others. We present a case of malignant cylindroma located on the left parietal-occipital scalp that was treated twice by Mohs micrographic surgery in an attempt to excise the tumor completely and to minimize the excision of normal tissue. An unusual case of malignant cylindroma of the scalp arising in a 79-year-old white female with multiple cylindromatosis is presented. The tumor apparently arose from a cylindroma and had features of spiradenoma. Multiple cylindromatosis is an uncommon hereditary autosomal dominant disease, which is characterized by multiple skin adnexal tumors like cylindromas and trichoepitheliomas and Cylindroma was first described by Ancell in 1842. [1] However, the term cylindroma was coined by Billroth in 1859.

They may also appear darker than surrounding skin.

2019-07-13 Low power view of cylindroma shows a non- encapsulated tumour nodule arising from the dermis (Figure 1). This is formed by multiple irregular tumour islands, distributed in an aptly named ‘jigsaw’ pattern (Figure 2). Surrounding the tumour islands, and in discrete droplets within the nodules is a thick hyaline deposit (Figure 3). Cytology of dermal cylindroma is rarely discussed in previous literature.
